Gram’s Classic Waffles

My mom’s timeless waffle recipe. Gram’s Classic Waffles are perfect for a Sunday brunch.

Gram's Classic Waffles: fluffly waffles with strawberries and whipped cream

One of our wedding gifts was a double waffle iron. We hadn’t registered or asked anyone for it, so we were certainly surprised when we opened it. We were certainly appreciative of the gift, but not overly excited because we already had a basic waffle iron. Let me tell you, the first time we made a batch of waffles using the double waffle iron, my husband and I were immediately shouting from the rooftops how great this invention was. A whole batch can be cooked in 15 minutes!

Don’t get me wrong… I still love my old waffle iron as well, and any waffle iron will do the trick with this recipe.

To make Gram’s Classic Waffles, start by whipping the eggs. This should take about a minute with hand mixer on medium speed or a few minutes with a whisk. I look for the entire surface to be covered in small air bubbles. Next, add the remaining ingredients and mix until well blended, about 2-3 minutes with a hand mixer. After that, leave it to your favorite waffle iron to cook up delicious waffles.

Top with your favorite toppings like whipped cream, maple syrup, butter, and powdered sugar!

FAQs

Do I need to whip the eggs first?

Whipping the eggs first helps to make the batter fluffier, but the waffles are certainly still delicious if the eggs are not whipped beforehand.

Do I need a hand mixer?

Nope! A whisk and some extra effort works just as well to make Gram’s Classic Waffles. I often use a whisk because it’s easier than getting the hand mixer ready. (And because my whisk is dishwasher safe, but the hand mixer beaters are not.)

Do I need a double waffle iron?

Nope! It helps, but certainly not necessary.
